Acts 16

Hey guys! I really enjoyed reading Acts 16. Its all about Paul and Silas being put in prison and God breaking them out again. This time in the process they are even able to save the jailer! So let's get started.

Paul find Timothy in Lystra who wants to follow them. And then this is were it gets a bit awkward because there is only one problem. Timothy is not circumcised and the Jews who lived in that area still believed circumcision was mandated. You have to remember that Paul didn't circumcise Timothy because they had to, he did it for the sake of ministry What does Timothy's willingness to be circumcised show about his dedication?

Paul and Silas are in Phillipi preaching the gospel when a demon possessed girl who could tell fortunes follows them saying, "These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." The girl continues to do this for a few days then finally Paul is fed up and commons the demon to leave her. The masters' of the girl were furious. They beat them and put them in prison. How do you think a girl shouting at the apostles affected their mood? The girl's owners rejected the Gospel because it cost them financially. What financial concerns keep some people from faith today?

While in jail, there's a huge earthquake. The earthquake is so powerful in fact that the jail doors swing open and the chains fall of the prisoners. The jailer becomes suicidal but Paul and Silas are able to tell him the good news/ "They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household.""(v. 31) What does Paul and Silas' response show about them? If asked, "What must I do to be saved" how would you answer?

Paul and Silas go all out when preaching the good news. This even gets them beaten and put in jail. What is something that can hold you back from ministering?

In the first part of the chapter, Paul tries to enter Asia, but the Holy Spirit stops him. I thought that was interesting because Paul was doing something that was right according to the Scripture, but God stopped him. When you do something for God it also has to be according to His will. Otherwise it's a waste because God won't be with you. When Paul went to Macedonia like God wanted him to, he was blessed and many people got saved.

That makes sense Nathan. We always must listen to the Holy Spirit's direction. Just because something fits what's right and good, doesn't mean it's the "right and good" in the right direction we're supposed to be going for the specific purpose we've been designed for.

So the churches were strengthened in faith, and they increased in numbers daily. Acts 16:5 (esv)
This verse stuck out to me today. Reading it makes me want this for impact church. I think that if we all give our best we can grow the church in faith and size. I'm really excited for christmas eve services. If we each bring one lost person it would double the size of the church and if God softens their hearts it would increase the number of God's children.

So they went out of the prison and visited Lydia. And when they had seen the brothers they encouraged them and then departed. Acts 16:40 (esv)
This verse also stuck out to me today. They kinda go with each other. If we encourage one another to pray and read the Bible then it will also enable us to invite others because we have a strong faith. Encouragement is a hard thing because there is a difference from encouraging someone to pray and nagging them. I think if we gently encourage on another our church will grow strong in faith and great in size.~abby<3

I really like what you said Nathan about how if we do something for God it has to be according to his will because other wise he will not be with us and we won't accomplish anything!

I love EVERYTHING you said Abby! You made some really great points! I really liked what you said about encouraging someone and nagging someone because it can be really hard sometimes to encourage someone.

Today I really liked verse 31.
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household." Acts 16:31 (NLT)

This verse tells us exactly what we have to do. We as followers must go out and tell the lost about Jesus. Once we do this and they have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior they are saved and get to be with him when they die. Its also a great thing when they accepted him because the verse says that the household will be saved too. Meaning that the persons family will be saved too because they will see what is going on in the family members life and they will want that too, and because they are family they might accepted it better than from some random person who just walks up and tells them about Jesus.

I was saved when I was 10. I know for a fact that it was because of what my Aunt told me about how to ask Jesus to come into my heart.

Acts 16:25-31 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”

I loved reading this chapter in acts. It was amazing to see how powerful God really is. He made the prison walls fall down and also opened the heart and eyes of the prison guard. It says that the prison doors opened and all the people fled from that terrifying Jail. I would be scared out of my mind if this happened to me! But god had his hand on Paul and Silas the whole time!!!
